2022: Year In Review
Date:2023.01.03

Thanks to YOU, Seibo was able to achieve great results in 2022. We continue to distribute meals to approximately 16,000 children daily through elementary schools in the north and kindergartens in the south. We were also able to send a total of $78,789 to Malawi, including donations from supporting companies. Thank you very much to everyone who made this possible.

In Japan, many people have been involved in supporting Malawi, and as a result, our donor community has been able to grow even in difficult circumstances. In this article, we would like to summarize the main events of 2022.

January & February: Tropical Storm Ana
The year 2022 started with a major challenge. In particular CBCCs (Community Based Childcare Centers) in the south, where Seibo provides meal support, were greatly affected by a tropical storm. However, with the support of everyone, we were able to rebuild the buildings and resume school feeding. In particular, the Makapwa CBCC in the south, a small place in a mountainous area, rebuilt its classrooms and resumed the safe provision of meals with your help as can be seen in this report from February!

Water for Makapwa Nursery
Your kindness made a huge difference in 2022 as can be seen from this image report featuring the newly built Makapwa nursery. Since then a solar-powered well has been added and with measures like these you help to future proof and promote a safe environment for a school meal. In particular, we received a lot of support for the installation of the well & subsequent school meal support from Tablecross, for which we are truly grateful. Tablecross supports Seibo’s meal support through the Food for Happiness Project.

May & July: Food Distribution

From May to July 2022, Seibo Japan continued its school feeding support to children in Malawi. In the northern region of Mzimba, Seibo provided school meals to around 14,000 children in primary schools. However, due to the government’s decision not to provide subsidies for school feeding in May, some schools were unable to prepare meals, resulting in relatively low numbers of children being provided with meals.

In the southern region, Seibo provided meals to about 1,400 children in kindergarten, prioritizing families facing poverty. The “Seibo Kids” program, which supports families with young children, added 8 new children in May, bringing the total number to 78. Seibo conducted home visits to assess the impact of its feeding support on families.

In July, Seibo provided meals to 1,330 children, including those in rural CBCCs (Community-Based Child Care centers), such as Makapwa.

June: Musical Performance

In March 2022, we were able to hold a music event that gave energy to the children! The event was held on June 10, 2022, in the southern Malawian city of Blantyre, and featured the famous artist Faith Mussa! Children from local nursery schools supported by Seibo performed in ethnic costumes, and each school competed in their performances, which was impressive. We would like to thank everyone at Shizuoka Futaba High School in Japan for their support in making this event happen. You can see the event’s highlights HERE!

September to December Summary

Thanks to the addition of Chiutsandeu CBCC as a new partner, we were able to expand our school feeding programme. The CBCC featured in our school feeding report covering the period from September to December HERE! In addition to our regular school feeding programme, we also provided meals to seven nurseries supported by Stephanos, a charity that helps to provide material support for rural nurseries. While Stephanos does not provide direct financial support, they do provide funding for constructio In the latten.r half of 2022, Seibo’s local staff visited the seven CBCCs supported by Stephanos to explore a deeper partnership, details of which can be viewed HERE!

Seibo: Partnering with the Japanese People!

In 2022, we particularly felt that we strengthened our ties with the people of Japan. Through our coffee brand, Warm Hearts Coffee Club, we were able to raise awareness about Malawi and how our activities support the SDGs & CSR initiatives. We are grateful for the support we received from corporations who used our products in this manner.

We also appreciate the schools and educational institutions who have partnered with us to address international issues of poverty and to promote the importance of providing meals to those in need. We are pleased to have gained more school partners to work together towards our goals. You can find further information about our main partner schools on our website.

Thanks to these partnerships, we had the opportunity to speak about our activities at various events, which allowed us to further promote our work in Japan. It was a fruitful year for our activities in Japan, and we are extremely grateful for all the support we received.

Our Thanks to You!

In 2022, we received a total of 8,468,678 yen in donations in Japan, which we were able to transfer to Malawi to provide school meals. We would like to express our heartfelt thanks to everyone who made a direct donation or donated through the Warm Hearts Coffee Club by purchasing coffee. We are also very grateful to everyone who invited us to school events and speaking engagements.

We are pleased to announce that our contributions to Malawi and our connections with the people of Japan have been recognized, and we were rewarded with a social contribution award. We will continue to work for the children in Malawi from Japan and to change the world through our support of Malawi, and we look forward to your continued cooperation. Thank you so much!
