Walking Together in the Salesian Spirit: Collaboration Between Japanese Sister Schools and NPO Seibo
Date:2026.03.08

NPO Seibo delivers school meals to children in Malawi, Africa. At the heart of our mission lies a deep bond with the Salesian community and a shared resonance with Don Bosco’s educational vision of forming “honest citizens and good Christians” and its education originated from his “Oratorio” in Italy.

In Malawi, it is also very important to provide jobs for young people and actually our mission as Seibo Japan started because of a UK businessman, Tony Smith’s question to the local elder lady, “What do you think you need in Malawi”? And the answer is “Jobs for young people!”.

That is why Seibo Japan are still focusing on providing school meals for the kids, getting jobs in the future locally at the vocational centre which was also founded by Tony Smith and his colleagues including the graduates from Don Bosco Technical College in Lilongwe.

Here, we are pleased to share some of the concrete initiatives carried out by each school over the past three years.

Salesio Gakuin Junior and Senior High School (Kanagawa):

Through inquiry-based learning and school events, students engage in practical approaches to addressing social issues.

-Ongoing Support through the MACOSY Project:
Students independently plan and manage fair trade charity Malawian coffee sales, delivering a significant number of school meals to Malawi. Their efforts have influenced other schools as well, earning the Community Award at the Volunteer Spirit Award.

The MACOSY Project has now joined with groups such as “Foster Friend” from Shizuoka Futaba High School to form a nationwide student alliance called the Youths’ Coffee Movement. Together, they conduct joint sales initiatives.

At a recent event, Fr. Enomoto—Chaplain and Board Member of NPO Seibo—shared a message emphasizing not a relationship of giver and receiver, but an educational community built on mutual flourishing, where both sides elevate one another.

Integration with Project-Based Learning (PBL):

Students go beyond simple sales activities. As part of PBL, they analyze the structure of NPOs and the principles of fair trade, deepening their sense of purpose and reflecting on their personal “vocation.”

Celebrating the 90th Anniversary Together
With a unique approach that nurtures both technical skills and the heart, the college has expanded the circle of support.

Charity Sales at the School Festival (October 2023):

Through fair trade coffee sales, the school raised donations equivalent to approximately 7,000 school meals.

90th Anniversary Ceremony (January 2026):
At this commemorative event, Seibo provided mini chocolates and coffee made from Kwanza Cocoa, first introduced by Seibo from Mzimba in northern Malawi.
Packaged with an original Salesio College design label, these products were warmly received by distinguished guests.

Salesian International School (Tokyo, Akabane):

Students take responsibility for their activities by deeply understanding the background of the products they sell.

-Visit to the Roasting Facility (January 2023):

Members of the Craft Club visited a coffee roasting facility to better communicate the story behind the product to customers. They observed the transformation of green beans during roasting—the changes in color and the “cracking” sounds—gaining both knowledge and a strong sense of responsibility as sellers.

-Handmade Gift Initiative (June 2023):
Applying what they learned, students sold coffee accompanied by handmade gift cards, raising funds equivalent to approximately 990 school meals.

Salesian International School Setagaya & Salesio Junior High School

New collaborations continue to emerge from Salesian International School Setagaya (February 2026):
A special lecture course, collaboratively developed by overseas interns and domestic volunteers, was delivered to broaden students’ global perspectives.

Salesio Junior High School (Kodaira, September 2025):

A workshop was held in preparation for the school festival, creating opportunities for junior high students to learn about the SDGs and the mechanisms of international cooperation from an early stage.

Through the concrete actions of selling coffee and chocolate, students at Salesian sister schools across Japan are connecting with children in distant Malawi and growing together.

We firmly believe that this inspiring circle of an “educational community” will continue to make the world a better place.
We sincerely look forward to continuing this journey together with all members of the Salesian Family.
