Seibo Mills starts to provide school meals!
Date:2026.03.17

In 2026, NPO Seibo’s work in Malawi reached a major turning point. The support system that has been built over the years has evolved even further, and for the first time, meals produced by Seibo itself are now being delivered directly to children.

In this article, we introduce “Seibo Mills,” the new facility at the center of this initiative.
The photos included here were provided by student staff who visited the mill construction site during 2025.

1. A Step Toward Self-Reliance: Why Our Own Mill Was Needed

Until now, Seibo purchased Likuni Phala—the fortified flour used for school meals—from companies within Malawi.
Likuni Phala is a local nutritious food similar to porridge, made by crushing maize and cooking it with hot water until soft.

Donations from partner organizations in Japan and the United Kingdom made it possible to purchase this food, and local staff distributed it to partner preschools and primary schools.

However, in order to make the support system more sustainable and ensure that even more children can receive stable meals, Seibo made an important decision: to achieve self-sufficiency in maize, the key ingredient for school meals.

In late 2025, Seibo began building a system to secure maize stocks by forming direct partnerships with local farmers. At the same time, construction began on Seibo Mills, a dedicated facility where the maize could be processed into Likuni Phala.

2. February 2026: The First Meals Produced at Seibo Mills

Only a few months after construction began, the modern facility with its white walls on a spacious site was completed. Soon after, the first bags of school meal flour bearing the Seibo logo were shipped out.

In February 2026, the very first batch of Likuni Phala produced at Seibo Mills was delivered to the preschools supported by Seibo.

This marked a special moment: meals created through collaboration with local farmers and processed at Seibo’s own facility were finally placed into the hands of children—bringing smiles and nourishment to their daily lives.

3. The Future Value Created by Seibo Mills

The launch of this mill represents much more than simply producing school meals.

1. Greater Sustainability
By producing and managing food locally rather than relying on external suppliers, Seibo can reduce costs and create a more stable, long-term support system.

2. Contribution to the Local Economy
Direct partnerships with local farmers help support livelihoods and promote economic independence within Malawian communities.

4. Our Pride: Likuni Phala

The newly designed Seibo Mills packaging contains a nutritious blend of maize, soybeans, and sugar.

Each bag provides essential nutrition that supports the growth and development of children who represent the future of Malawi.

The launch of Seibo Mills marks a historic step forward for Seibo’s mission of “Feeding the Future.”

Producing the food ourselves and delivering it directly to children—this new cycle is made possible thanks to the support of our partners and supporters in Japan and around the world.

Seibo will continue moving forward so that children in Malawi can enjoy nutritious porridge and learn with energy and hope each day.
We warmly invite you to continue supporting and following the next chapter of Seibo’s work.
