The First Five Years
Date:2016.07.12

The first five years of a child’s life are particularly important and brain development is modified by the quality of a young child’s environment. Most children under five in Malawi live in poverty, are malnourished and lack opportunities for play and early stimulation; they are also exposed to stressful environments.

In Malawi private nurseries and CBCCs – Community Based Children’s Centres- provide care outside the home for children under-5 giving guardians a break from the burden of care and the opportunity to engage in other activities including work and household activities.

The link between health, education and well-being of children and that of poverty reduction is widely recognised. For example, it has been demonstrated that children who have participated in early childhood education and related programs generally remain in school, are unlikely to repeat classes and their class performance is much better compared to those who have never attended pre-primary programmes.
