A group of volunteer students from Marist Brothers International School in Suma Ward, Kobe, Hyogo Prefecture became interested in the connection between environmental issues, sanitation challenges, and school feeding support in Malawi. This interest led them to become involved in supporting the construction of a well at Mptola CBCC.

Seibo Japan operates an online internship course, and this program began as part of the learning experience within that course.
Improving the sanitary conditions of a well leads to the use of clean water in school feeding programs, which helps ensure that nutritious meals essential for children’s growth can be provided consistently.
In addition, once a well is installed, it can also create the possibility of installing toilets in the future.
The well will not only be used by the school but also by the surrounding community, contributing to the revitalization of the entire community.
About Mptola CBCC
Mptola CBCC is a kindergarten located in a mountainous area in the southern region of Malawi, where it is difficult for government support to reach.
CBCC stands for Community Based Childcare Centre. These centers are places where children naturally gather within the community, and local mothers serve as caregivers and teachers, providing childcare and early education.
The Mptola community operates in this way as well. However, when floods or droughts occur, the damage can be significant. As a result, children may not be able to attend school regularly, and mothers sometimes struggle to balance their work with caring for the children.
By providing a well in such a place, the presence of clean water can create a gathering point for children, mothers, fathers, and the entire community.
It also ensures that children can safely receive school meals and that a hygienic environment can be maintained.
We warmly welcome your support here.
More detailed information will be provided soon by our local staff in Malawi.
Please stay tuned.
Why Hygienic School Meals Are Necessary
Malawi, located in southeastern Africa, is one of the countries with a high poverty rate in the world.
Many children come to school without breakfast, with insufficient food at home, and often in a state of malnutrition.
As a result, problems arise such as children being unable to concentrate in class due to hunger, missing school to work, or dropping out altogether.
In other words, before children can receive an education, the basic challenge is simply having enough to eat.
2. Providing Warm School Meals
NPO Seibo provides warm school meals every day at primary schools and other educational institutions in Malawi.
The main menu is a nutritious porridge called “Likuni Phala,” made from maize, soybeans, and peanuts.
This meal is designed to provide a balanced intake of energy, protein, and vitamins.
School feeding support in Malawi plays a major role in helping children attend school and continue learning. However, there is another essential element required to sustain school feeding programs: safe water, in other words, wells.
In many parts of Malawi, it is not uncommon for homes and schools to lack access to a safe water source nearby. Children often have to walk long distances to collect water from rivers or ponds. However, such water is not always clean and can cause illness if consumed.
Preparing school meals requires a large amount of water.
For example:
・Washing ingredients
・Cooking porridge (Likuni Phala)
・Cleaning dishes
・Washing hands
Water is used in all of these processes. Without safe water at the school, it is impossible to prepare meals hygienically.
In other words, only when a well is available can school meals be provided safely and reliably.
Furthermore, wells also play an important role in protecting children’s health. Access to clean water allows proper handwashing, which helps prevent disease. When children remain healthy, they can attend school every day and concentrate fully on their studies.
Through learning and collaboration between NPO Seibo and the students of Marist Brothers International School, the relationship between school feeding and well construction became clearer and deeper, which led to this initiative.
With the construction of a well, not only can school feeding programs continue stably, but local residents will also gain access to safe water.
In other words, school meals support children’s learning, and wells support those school meals.
Behind every bowl of school meal lies the effort to secure water.
A well is not simply a source of water; it is a vital resource that supports children’s health, education, and the future of the entire community.
Your Support
Your support helps create a brighter future for children in Malawi.
The total cost of installing the well is approximately 3 million yen, but we have decided to begin taking small steps toward this goal from now.
This initiative also gives confidence to the students in Japan who are promoting this activity and encourages them to deepen their learning further.
For the future of both Malawi and Japan, we kindly ask for your support.
