At Nanzan University, Seibo’s Malawi tea is sold through NES Co., Ltd. We have worked together with the Nanzan Educational Corporation in many activities through sister schools such as Seien Jogakuin, Seirei Kindergarten, and Nanzan University. We are deeply honored that our tea has been selected and offered as an official Nanzan University product.
The Society of the Divine Word, Founder of the Nanzan Educational Corporation, and Malawi
In 2025, the Society of the Divine Word (SVD) celebrated its 150th anniversary.
Founded in 1875 by Saint Arnold Janssen, the Society of the Divine Word has carried the mission of spreading the “Word of God” throughout the world, walking alongside people in many regions through education, missionary work, and social service.
The relationship between the Society of the Divine Word and Malawi has a long history, beginning missionary activities in 1903 in what was then British Nyasaland (present-day Malawi).
Since then, the Society has been deeply involved in building the foundations of Malawian society through school education, medical care, and community development.
As a university founded by the Society of the Divine Word, Nanzan University has inherited this missionary spirit within its educational philosophy.
As one concrete expression of this spirit, we hope that Malawian tea will continue to be offered at shops on campus.
Although Malawi is one of Africa’s leading tea-producing countries, many of its tea producers are small-scale farmers living under severe economic conditions.
Introducing Malawian tea within the university and making it part of everyday life is not simply a matter of purchasing a product; it is also an act of reflecting on the lives and history of people in distant production regions.
We sincerely hope that the spirit of the Society of the Divine Word and Malawi will continue to be connected, and that we can further expand our activities together with the Nanzan community.
