In June 2026, during the final class of the term for junior and senior high school students at Koen Girls’ School, we held a workshop where students cooked and tasted Likuni Phala, the porridge actually served in Malawian school meal programs!
The students recreated the exact same menu—made from maize flour—that is served in schools across Malawi.
Although the recipe was simple, it helped bring to life the school meal support in Malawi that they had been studying, allowing the team to feel a much deeper, tangible connection to Malawi.
Questions naturally came up regarding how meals are served locally, what time the mothers arrive to start cooking, and under what conditions they work, showing a deepening interest among the students.

Furthermore, during the class, we showed them actual scenes from school meal sites in Malawi, helping them understand the local environment, management challenges, and the vital importance of the work Seibo does.
In the second term, our classes will focus on preparing for the Shinbokukai (School Festival) coming up in November.
Building on what they learned this time, we hope the students will be able to explain the Malawian school meal program to visitors in even greater detail, and help sell the charity coffee and tea that directly support these meals!
